BOOK OF THE MONTH

2
The Gnostic Discoveries: The Impact of the Nag Hammadi Library
By Marvin Meyer

Before the discovery of the Nag Hammadi documents in the 1940s, Gnosticism
was considered to be a form of anti-Christian heresy taught by some early church
fathers and condemned by others. Modern readers depended on secondary works
condemning Gnosticism in order to understand its proponents' point of view. But
with the unearthing of the Gnostic texts at Nag Hammadi, scholars have a better
idea of the scope and direction of Gnostic teaching in the early years of
Christianity as told by its adherents. Meyer, professor of Bible and Christian
studies at Chapman University in California, boasts nine previous publications on
the subject and demonstrates a deep understanding of both the history and
content of the documents. After briefly recounting their discovery, he analyzes
their content, sorting through the teachings and relating them, not just to the
biblical text, but even to the bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code. Although there
is no new material, the author's concise presentation will appeal to many readers.
Meyer writes clearly, bringing both the people and the times of the early Gnostic
writings to life and making them accessible to scholar and layperson alike.

LACONNEAU AUTUMN FESTIVAL

3

Laconneau Autumn Festival
Friday, October 31 - Sunday, November 2, 2008
Artemis House, Greenville, NC

The Laconneau Autumn Festival is a rich and deeply meaningful time. It is a time
for remembering our history, which extends from the dimly lit shadows of the
early Christian era through the difficult and dangerous medieval centuries to this
modern age. Through this festival, we celebrate the One we serve as well as all
those women of courage, our sisters throughout the ages, whose courage and self-
sacrifice have allowed us to participate in this rich inheritance. We remember
them not in sorrow but in joy, for this is the time of the inward journey, the giving
up of the old life in the sure knowledge of rebirth.

In full awareness of the disturbing changes that are taking place on a daily basis
in the world around us, never in recent memory has there been a time when it has
been more vitally important for strong women everywhere to join together in an
attempt to find a real solution which truly reflects women’s values, and their
aspirations for the future.

This year, we will continue to hold the Autumn Festival in the old way and in full
accord with the principles of our Tradition. Come join us in Greenville, North
Carolina for this wonderful weekend of comradeship, discussion, feminine
spirituality and festivities. Lend your voice to the power and love of sisters such
as yourself who feel a burning need to see change in this troubled world.

News from the Carolinas:
Laconneau of the Carolinas held a young women's dinner on July 25.  The dinner
was a success and enjoyed by all who attended.  After dinner, the film Peaceful
Warrior was shown and followed by a discussion.  Another dinner is scheduled
for August 29.

On Sunday July 27, the Greenville Circle held their first hike and meditation.  It
was quite a successful hike.  It was a beautiful day and we turned our 2-hour hike
into a 3-1/2 hour hike.  We met some wonderful people along the way.  Due to the
success of this event, we will repeat this event again in the fall.

A new circle is being formed in Simpsonville, SC. Simpsonville is located in
upstate South Carolina, between Greenville and Spartanburg.  Women's Circles
are being held in Simpsonville twice a month.  Thanks to the women of the North
Carolina and Atlanta circles for their support and guidance in establishing this
new circle.  Please consider a visit to the Simpsonville circle - we would welcome
your presence and participation.

Washington, DC News:
As summer draws to an end, we look forward to welcoming back all those who

expanding and bringing wonderful new women into our community.

This month’s community event on September 13 will take us to Poolesville,
